Voted European home computer for four
consecutive years. The Amiga as a computer
took the world by storm as a low cost very
powerful system capable of output direct to
either a television, video or monitor.
It became the industry standard base for
acheiving low-cost computer graphics effects
on many television programs and more than a
few Hollywood feature-films.
Commodore started production of the first
model, the A1000 in 1985 and went on to
develop the A500, A2000, A1500, A3000, A500+,
A600, A1200 and A4000 models.
Commodore closed down in 1992/1993 and sold
it's stock and Research Division to the
German company "Escom" shortly after for
around $12,000,000 who started a seperate
company to carry on the development of the
Amiga (Amiga Technologies).
Escom closed all of it's European Outlets in
1996. "Amiga" is now owned by the Gateway2000
Corporation and trading under the names of
Amiga International and Amiga Inc.
The future of the Amiga platform is now
looking brighter than it has been for a long
while with new models (A5000 / A6000) in
production and more to follow.
